About the Project

Centenary Park is becoming a focus for youth recreation following the addition of a new basketball court and play equipment which was completed on 7 March 2019.

  • The $200,000 project was funded using $100,000 under NSW Government’s Infrastructure Grants Program and $100,000 from Tamworth Regional Council.
  • The grant made it possible to transform the park into an inviting youth space and a location to host community events.
  • The improvements have opened up opportunities to expand the delivery of programs at the adjacent Tamworth Regional Youth Centre.
  • The Youthie staff are looking to coordinate recreational basketball events which will also include the wider community.
  • New park facilities enhances efforts to provide a safe, youth friendly space where young people can socialise.

Background

In 2016 Council undertook a survey to understand the needs of Centenary Park users and nearby residents. The majority of survey respondents said they would like to be able to play football at the park with others wanting to play basketball or play on designated play equipment.

In February 2018 Council spent $100,000 to install a football field which is irrigated using bore water then followed the Centenary Park Outdoor Youth Space project.
