Garage Sale Trail

Garage Sale Trail is Australia's festival of pre-loved stuff. It happens online and in the community too. The festival is dedicated to helping you extend the life of your stuff and find the ultimate pre-loved gem.

Garage Sale Trail is back, and it's bigger and better than ever. For the first time, Garage Sale Trail 2021 will take place over three glorious weekends from 6 to 21 November, allowing even more people to sell, shop and learn about the circular economy. Australians can take advantage of easing restrictions with garage sales happening in the community or online through virtual garage sales.

Garage Sale Trail 2020 extended the life of over 1.5 million kgs of stuff at over 10,000 garage sales across the country. A massive win for the planet, seller’s pockets and bargain hunting shoppers all over Australia.

Weekend one, 6 – 7 November, will be dedicated to learning about the circular economy through a series of free online masterclasses, Trail Tutorials.

Introduced for the first time in 2020, Trail Tutorials were so popular that the program has been extended for 2021. A team of experts will come together from the worlds of fashion, styling, finance and sustainability.

The line up includes fashion designer Kit Willow, 1 Million Women founder Natalie Issacs, Ella Hooper, finance expert Molly Benjamin, interior designer Adam Powell, master stitcher and maker Daisy Braid, and sustainable fashion educator and eco stylist Nina Gbor. Sessions will show you how to DIY your wardrobe, dress sustainably, make reselling a side hustle and more. They’ll also share practical tips for hosting a garage sale, both online and in person.

Check the website for the full Trail Tutorials program and session times. And make sure you register early to secure your spot!

Weekends two and three, 13 – 14 and 20 – 21 November are all about selling stuff you no longer need and snagging guilt free bargains with an expected million plus items up for sale!

This year, Australians can again get involved for free in Garage Sale Trail both online or in the community (depending on local restrictions). Whether you’re going virtual or IRL, after registering as a seller you’ll receive a bunch of tools and tips to set you up for success! IRL sellers will receive free digital posters and social media images to help promote their sale, price tags and an all-important COVID Safe tool kit. While online sellers will get materials to promote their sale online and signage to decorate their home if they're streaming live.

There are tips and tricks too from Garage Sale Trail ambassador and online super seller Danielle Goodwin AKA Hawkeye Vintage. Garage Sale Trail is stoked to be partnering with PayPal to enable cashless payments at this year’s event. That means sellers with PayPal accounts can use QR codes for touch-free, in-person payments if selling IRL, and PayPal.Me payments on the world wide web for online sellers.

National Recycling Week

National Recycling Week, established by Planet Ark in 1996, is held every year during the second week of November (8th to 14th of November 2021). This year we're celebrating its 25th anniversary! Therefore, the focus of 2021 is "Celebrate National Recycling Week YOUR way!"

Check It! Before You Chuck It is a new campaign encouraging us all to always check the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) when disposing of packaging. Always following the ARL ensures packaging is disposed of correctly and can be recovered for future use in new products.

Take a look at the animation above – we guarantee you’ll be hearing the jingle in your head the next time you’re at the bin!

Research shows having recycling programs in place is not only good for the environment but also for staff morale. Three in four employees agreeing that having effective recycling programs at work makes them feel better about their employer. Download the Business Recycling Guide for more hot tips!

Our friends Sonny and Skye have heaps of awesome recycling activities for you to complete.

You can take household quantities of the following household chemicals and items – up to a maximum of 20L or 20kg of a single item:

  • Solvents and household cleaners
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Poisons
  • Pool chemicals
  • Hobby chemicals
  • Motor fuels
  • Fluorescent globes and tubes
  • Acids and alkalis
  • Smoke detectors
  • Paint and paint-related products
  • Gas bottles
  • Fire extinguishers

Manilla Waste Management Facility - Sunday, 14 November 2021, 1pm – 3:30pm

Handle and transport chemicals carefully:

  • Never mix chemicals as this may produce dangerous reactions.
  • Wherever possible, keep all chemicals in their original containers.
  • Ensure containers are clearly labelled and well-sealed. If you do not know the contents, label the container ‘unknown chemical’.
  • Place household chemicals in the boot of your car in a large sturdy container or tray when transporting.

National Asbestos Awareness Month

November is Asbestos Awareness Month.

During this time SafeWork NSW's aim is to educate Australians about the dangers of asbestos in and around homes because we have one of the highest rates of asbestos-related diseases in the world. While officially, Asbestos Awareness Week is the last week of November, SafeWork extends their Asbestos Awareness Campaign to be a month long to allow us to have a bigger impact and spread the message further over a longer period of time.

Northern Inland Regional Waste (NIRW) has provided Councils across the New England North West region a number of Household Asbestos Testing Kits. The kits are available to help residents identify asbestos-containing material and assist with safe management or removal. Kits are available to households only (1 per household) and are not for commercial/industrial use.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the mailing of the kits has been delayed however residents can complete a “collection form” at any Council office from this week and they will be notified when their kit is available.

NIRW have paid for all kits including return postage and NATA-accredited laboratory testing. Test results will be supplied to resident and NIRW. Positive test results will also be forwarded to Council Waste Staff to assist with asbestos disposal.
