Aboriginal artefacts found on work site

3 June 2020

Work is continuing to ensure Aboriginal artefacts found on the site of the Tamworth Regional Astronomy and Science Centre are handled respectfully and with care.

During the first stages of the construction, Donny Fermor, of Tamworth Local Lands Council has been on site with local archaeologist Pat Gaynor.

Mr Fermor and Mr Gaynor said that the Victoria Park area may have been a trade place for the Kamilaroi/Gomeroi people. They said that artefacts with the same type of stone were found nearby at Moonbi and Chaffey Dam. This could show the possible exchanging of goods between travelling groups.

The artefacts will be studied and documented before being moved to the Tamworth Aboriginal Keeping Place at Tamworth Regional Botanic Garden.
