Intermodal Access Road to put trucks on track

11 March 2021

Works continues to progress at the Tamworth Global Gateway Park, with construction beginning this week on the access road that will enable the transfer of freight from truck to train.

The Tamworth Intermodal Freight Facility will form a key component of the industrial park, enabling businesses to transfer freight travelling by road to train, therefore reducing transport costs. For businesses wishing to export internationally, freight can then be easily transported to Port Botany and the Port of Newcastle. The Intermodal Access Road will link the Intermodal Freight Terminal to Goddard Lane on the western border of the precinct and provide access to the Oxley Highway.

Col Murray, Tamworth Regional Mayor said that development infrastructure like the Intermodal Access Road is essential in order for the terminal to serve its purpose.

“Facilities which enable this type of freight transfer are few and far between in regional New South Wales and will provide a point of difference for the Park. The Intermodal Access Road will provide the necessary access needed to make the terminal functional”, he said.

At 246 hectares, the size of Sydney’s CBD, the Park is one of the most exciting enterprise and logistics hub developments in regional Australia.

“The Global Gateway Park is the centrepiece of Blueprint 100, our road map to help Tamworth grow. These multi-million dollar infrastructure projects will help bring new residents to our city by creating new industry and jobs”, said the Mayor.

Construction of the Intermodal Access Road is expected to be complete by October 2021, with initial works installing the necessary sewer systems under the road.

Development of the Intermodal Access Road at the Tamworth Global Gateway Park has been funded by the Australian Government under its Building Better Regions Fund in association with Tamworth Regional Council, contributing $2,202,291 and $3,583,980 to the project respectively.
